“So, chosen by God for this new life of love, dress in the wardrobe God picked out for you: compassion, kindness, humility, quiet strength, discipline. Be even-tempered, content with second place, quick to forgive an offense. Forgive as quickly and completely as the Master forgave you. And regardless of what else you put on, wear love. It’s your basic, all-purpose garment. Never be without it.” –Colossians 3:12-14 MSG
I can’t think of a better feeling than warring with something in life and then having the Holy Spirit point you to a scripture that has your name and current situation on it.
Satan has been on the prowl again testing that whole “seventy times seven times” forgiveness commandment in my life. I’ll be honest and confess that my flesh was unfortunately the first to respond, but after a moment of coming to myself, my spirit kicked in! Love is hard, especially when it involves people whose actions are not the most lovable. The carnal view of love entails others saying and doing things that are pleasing to you. While, the spiritual view of love is just the opposite. It’s having genuine compassion for others, even when they seemingly have none for you.
I bet Satan didn’t anticipate me reading Colossians 3:12-14 and gaining a less self-serving perspective on love. Chances are, he also didn’t see Jesus putting the garment of love on me while demonstrating how to pray sincere prayers for my adversaries!
One of the best revenges on Satan is the element of surprise! Scare him out of your life and thoughts by choosing goodwill and not disdain towards your enemies.
Isn’t the garment of love so light and freeing? Dr. MLK was right “Hate is too great a burden to bear.”
