LOVE Week 7: Sacrifices Self

To ask who is God, we must first answer what is love.

In love, there is always sacrifice, a time when the self is subordinated for the benefit of others.

john 6:51 tpt

“I alone am this living Bread that has come to you from heaven. Eat this Bread and you will live forever. The living Bread I give you is my body, which I will offer as a sacrifice so that all may live.”

Doesn’t the old saying go, “Somebody’s gotta do it!”? Thankfully that elusive “somebody” did do it and his name was Jesus!

In John 6:51, Jesus is preaching to a congregation about the way to eternal life, which is through him. He is also alluding to his death, which happens later in chapter 19 of John. Jesus knew that he was born to die on earth so that others could live eternally in Heaven.

We were all born to be that “somebody” for a specific calling. It might be a particular profession, an endeavor unrelated work or a combination of the two. The possibilities are endless and fortunately for us, God believes in efficiency, so no one else will ever have to go to the cross! And with death off the table, I think all other callings are much more doable, in spite of the sacrifices that may be involved. Though the road may be challenging, nothing can be more difficult than the death that Jesus suffered.

Life on earth for a believer is like a working vacation. Although, we get to enjoy the pleasures of life, we still have jobs to attend to…it’s a balancing act.

Despite his horrific death, I am positive that Jesus had some fun moments on earth. His 12 disciples alone had quite the personalities and that is not even including the men and women (like Mary Magdalene and others) who were his followers! I bet it was like Home Alone meets Cheaper by the Dozen minus modern day technology! Haha, I will have to ask him when I get to Heaven…
