“I call heaven and earth to witness against you that today I have set before you life or death, blessing or curse. Oh, that you would choose life; that you and your children might live!” -Deuteronomy 30:19 TLB
I love how this translation says, “Oh, that you would choose life…”, which implies that although God would prefer that we chose life, we are not required to.
Life is full of so many choices. What we wear and how much we eat. What we say and how late we sleep. If you count up all the choices you make in a day, I’m willing to bet that they would be in close proximity to the number of breaths you take. If you are breathing, then you are living and if you are living, then how you choose to live your life is yet…another choice.
Peace has been bequeathed to me, thanks to Jesus’ death, but until I choose to be at peace, then I’m like a prisoner who has the keys to her jail cell, yet remains captive. Think of life like this:
Satan’s Lies are being put on trial, with Satan representing himself as the defense, Jesus as the prosecutor, you as the jury and life as the judge. Jesus’ argument of His unfailing love is compelling as He shows pictures of himself hanging on the cross and offers a firsthand account of His crucifixion. However, Satan does rouse a bit of dubiety, during his time on the floor as he reminds you of all the times Jesus’ love seemed to fail when you experienced heartbreak and the demolition of your plans. You deliberate on the evidence and return to the courtroom with a verdict just 3 days later. “Your Honor, I choose to believe that the defendant is guilty on all charges.”
Life will be what you command it to be, just as a jury reads their verdict to a judge. Satan will relentlessly introduce contradictory evidence in your life as a means to sway your surety, just as a defense lawyer does. And Jesus will never stop fighting for you, just as a prosecuting attorney who has immense compassion for their client does.
What do you choose to be…the choice is all yours?
I CHOOSE TO BE [fill in the blank].
