Belonging

One perk of COVID-19 is that I am able to “virtually visit” other churches, that I have always been interested in but didn’t have time to do so before. And since this pandemic has occurred, I’ve noticed a pattern in teachings…most of the pastors have mentioned Genesis 1:26.

“And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.”

Genesis 1:26 KJV

Even more interesting are all the different spins that are coming off of this one verse…identity issues, dealing with uncertainty, dominion on earth, healthy relationships etc.. Yet, I see another topic, that I haven’t heard yet…belonging.

Where do we stand in a time when there is political and racial unrest in the world? Where is our place when social and economic avenues are limited? We stand on God’s Word and our place is with Him, where we can be sure that He has already established our path. We are created in His Likeness, as Spirits who are not bound to earthly circumstances. For God is always moving and our situation today may be radically different tomorrow (for the better, we believe!).

If we wait for protesting to stop, the economy to recover and the resolution of COVID-19, to feel at peace, we will find that we are only binding our lives to a bottomless pit of unpredictability. For “to belong” and “fit in” with the world, is to affix one’s hope on unsteady ground and always be searching something that outside of God, can never be found.
